Keep leaves out of the street Residents are responsible for keeping the sidewalk and street in front of their property free of yard waste and other debris. It can be tempting to rake or blow leaves into the road, but that clogs storm drains and can cause unsafe flooding in your neighborhood. It's also a violation of Newberg Municipal Code 8.15.030.B-10 and may result in fines.
Where should the leaves go? Newberg doesn't have a leaf pickup service, but you do have options. Short term and extra yard debris containers are available by contacting Waste Management, which makes bigger cleanup days a lot easier.
Spot a clogged storm drain? If you see one, grab a rake and clear the debris if you can do so safely. If you notice flooding, please call 503-537-1234 to report it. For your safety, avoid stepping into any standing water, since it can be deeper or more hazardous than it looks.
Don't forget about your trees and shrubs Once the leaves have fallen, your trees still need some attention. Fall and winter are a good time to prune most non-flowering trees. Many Newberg streets and sidewalks are lined with trees and shrubs, and they add so much to our community and our environment. But when they aren't maintained, they can become safety hazards. Overgrown branches and shrubs can force people to walk in the street to get around them, and low limbs can cause injuries to pedestrians. They can also block the view of drivers and pedestrians at intersections, and tree roots can damage sidewalks. Overgrowth can keep vehicles from parking next to the curb, and it can push taller vehicles toward the center of the road. Any of these can contribute to accidents and serious injuries.
See our Tree Trimming Page to learn more about the appropriate height branches should be trimmed above the street and sidewalk.
A little time with the rake and pruners goes a long way. Thank you for helping keep Newberg safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
