PERMIT TYPES WHEN TO APPLY
BUILDING PERMIT Applying for a Commercial, Government, Industrial or Residential permit requiring a plan review
- Combination of Structural, Mechanical or Plumbing permits.
- New Construction (single family, assessory dwelling units (ADU), apartments, restaurants, retail, etc)
- Alterations or Additions to existing buildings
SAME DAY PERMIT
Applying for a permit with simple construction work and no plan review is required
- Mechanical only
- Plumbing only
- Commercial Siding 
- Commercial Reroofing
SIGN PERMIT
Applying for a sign permit 
- Wall signs on the building
- Freestanding / Pole Signs
FIRE SPRINKLER/ALARM PERMIT Applying for a permit for new, alteration or additions to
- Fire Sprinkler System
- Fire Alarm
- Fire Suppression
RFI/ASI/DEFERRED/REVISION PERMITS Providing updates or changes for a submitted/issued permit
- ASI  (Architect Supplemental Instructions)
- RFI (Request for Information)
- Deferred

Your permit expires if work is not started within 180 days from its issuance. Once you have begun work, your permit expires if work is suspended or abandoned for 180 days or more. If you cannot work within a 180-day period but do not wish to abandon the project, you need to submit a request to the local building official for a permit extension.
