dareDrug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
The D.A.R.E. program was instituted in the Newberg-Dundee Schools in 2023 as a result of the strong partnership between the School District and the Newberg-Dundee Police Department.

History
The D.A.R.E. of today is much different from the D.A.R.E. many of us grew up with.  D.A.R.E and its programing have undergone dramatic changes since its beginning in 1983. In 2008, D.A.R.E launched the Keepin it Real Middle School Curriculum. In 2013, it launched the Keepin' it Real elementary curriculum. In 2016, the U.S Surgeon General endorsed the curriculum as effective.

The curriculum is designed based on the Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) Theory that identifies fundamental, basic skills and developmental processes needed for healthy development including:
  • Self-awareness and management
  • Responsible decision making
  • Understanding others
  • Relationship and communication skills
  • Handling responsibilities and challenges
The curriculum uses this theory to teach youth to control their impulses and think about risks and consequences resulting in more responsible choices.

DARE car 1Classes
Beginning in 2023, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) has been taught to all 5th graders in the Newberg-Dundee School District by SRO Jay Stearns. The 10-week curriculum ends with a culmination ceremony where the students are honored in front of their peers, family, and other members of the community.
