How do I get a library card?
Apply for a Library Card
Everyone is welcome to use library resources inside the library. The Newberg Public Library is supported by the residents living within the city limits of Newberg. In addition, there are also cooperative agreements with other areas that provide tax support for the library. There are different types of library cards available. Which one you qualify for depends on where you live. 

In-person:
Visit the Library Circulation Desk with identification and proof of current address. Children under 12 will need the signature and ID of a parent or guardian. 

Accepted forms of ID
  • Driver's license with current
  • Current Student ID card
  • Other government-issued ID showing nae and other identifying information
Proof of current address
  • Mail delivered by the Post Office within one week of the date of application
  • Driver's license with current address
  • Student's name and address through StudentVue
  • Other document showing applicant's name and address

Is curbside pick-up available?
Curbside pickup is available during all open library operating hours.

To pick up library material curbside, follow these steps:
  1. Place a hold on the items you would like through the library catalog or by calling the library.
  2. Receive notification that your items are available for pick-up.
  3. Call the library to let us know that you are ready to pick up your holds. We will need your library card number to look up your account. (503) 538-7323, option 6. We will need some time to prepare your material. 
  4. Arrive at the library and call the curbside telephone line to let us know that you are here. (503) 537-1229
How do I see the history of items I have previously checked out?
Physical material: The Newberg Public Library does not maintain a history of items that you have checked out to protect the privacy of our patrons. You may choose to opt-in to have a record of your checkout history that will begin from that point forward after opting-in. 

How to opt-in:
  • Visit our library catalog and log into your account. You will need your library card number and PIN.
  • Access the My Account tab at the top of the page. 
  • Go to the Personal Information tab and select the drop-down for preferences.
  • Click the box for record my checkout history and then select update.
  • That's it! Going forward you will have access to your check out history. Please note that we do not have the availability to retrieve checkout history before that point.
Digital materials: Items that you've check out using Libby will be added to your timeline. You will be able to see all of the titles that you have borrowed, placed on hold, renewed, and returned.

 

How do I renew my items?
The checkout period for most library items is three weeks. Most items will automatically renew for up to three times as long as there is not a hold on the item.

There are a few exceptions.
  • New books will not auto-renew.
  • Cultural Passes are due back on the day that you go.  
  • InterLibrary Loans (ILL) are due back by the date specified. A renewal can be requested. Please contact the Information desk for more information about renewing an ILL. (503) 538-7323, option 6.
How do I make a donation to the library?
Monetary Support:
Donations make a real difference in the quality of services available at the Newberg Public Library. Donors have supported summer reading programs, added books and other materials to the collection, purchased furniture and equipment and a myriad of other donations. 


The library is working with the Library Friends to help make the capital improvements to the building, such as repairs to the atrium and repairs and enhancements to the building. 

If you would like to make a donation, please contact Library Director, Korie Buerkle at korie.buerkle@newbergoregon.gov or you can make a donation directly to the Library Friends or Foundation. 

Books and other materials:
The Newberg Library Friends accept donations of books and other materials. If you'd like to donate books to the Library Friends, please keep the following in mind:

  • Books are accepted that are in good used condition. 
  • Books with mold, mildew, strong odors (cigarette smoke), water damage, stains, torn pages/covers, highlighted or in boxes that are dirty (been sitting in a garage or barn for years) cannot be accepted. 
  • Only current news magazines are accepted, but other types of magazines are welcomed.
  • No encyclopedias or textbooks. 
  • Commercially produced CDs and DVDs are accepted, but no home recorded ones are allowed.
  • Puzzles with all pieces intact. 
  • One or two boxes are accepted at a time.

What are the fines & fees for the library?
Library Fines & Fees
Below is a list of the fees associated with various library activities. Note that most items will renew automatically at the end of their checkout period, but NOT new items (with the new tape and date).

Membership Fees
Resident, in city limits.  FREE
Out of District card: lives outside of Marion, Polk, or Yamhill County; or outside city limits, but inside Yamhill County AND they want the full 50 item checkout.  $79/year or $40/ six months
Out of District card (patron is 65+): lives outside of Marion and Polk County; or outside city limits but inside Yamhill County AND they want the 50 item check out.  $70/year or $35/ six months
CCRLS Rural Fee Card: lives outside city limits but inside Marion or Polk county.  $60/year or $30/ six months
Basic Card: patrons who live inside Polk, Yamhill or Marion counties, but outside city limits AND are satisfied with a 10 item checkout limit.  FREE
CARE Card (Children & Teens): patrons under the age of 19 who live inside Polk, Yamhill or Marion counties AND are satisfied with a 25 item checkout limit.  FREE

How do I use a computer or Wi-Fi in the library?
Wireless Internet Access
The library offers wireless internet access at no charge to anyone with Wi-Fi enabled devices. The wireless internet service is not secure so please note that there are certain risks when using an unsecure connection. The user must configure their own equipment and connect to the following Wi-Fi network: LIBRARY PUBLIC WIFI.

Public Computers
The library has the following personal computers available for public use:
  • Computers with internet access are also equipped with Microsoft software and has access to online databases.
  • Computers with access to the library's online catalog.
  • Computers with internet access for children.
  • An express computer with internet access for a 15-minut session.
Other equipment available:

Charges for printing or making copies:
  • .20¢ per page for black & white prints and copies
  • .50¢ per page for color prints and copies

How do I check out a Wi-Fi Hotspot?
Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service (CCRLS) has provided its member libraries with wi-fi hotspots now available for check out. Hotspots have a 21-day check out period. The hotspot can support a total of eight Wi-Fi capable devices to the mobile broadband network. 

To borrow a hotspot, visit the upstairs information desk to check availability. (503) 538-7323, option 6. If a hotspot is not available, you can place a hold on one through our library catalog.

In order to check out a hotspot, please note:
  • You must be 18 years of age or older and have a CCRLS library card in good standing. 
  • Parents/guardians are responsible for the use of hotspots by minors
  • Overdue hotspots will be deactivated if it becomes overdue. After five days of being overdue, your account will be billed an $85.00 replacement charge.

Charges for printing or making copies:
  • .20¢ per page for black & white prints and copies
  • .50¢ per page for color prints and copies

How can I get technology help?
Contact the upstairs information desk at (503) 538-7323, option 6 to see if we can assist you. Tech Help appointments are for basic computer questions needing more than 15 minutes.

We can help with:
  • Downloading an eBook or eAudiobook
  • Using the library resources
  • Using your computer or device
  • Setting up an email account
We cannot help with:
  • Setting up a new device
  • Fixing or repairing a broken or infected device
  • Entering sensitive information for you (credit card info, social security, banking, etc.)
  • Providing tax, legal, medical, or business advice
  • Proofreading documents
Library staff will help you to the best of their abilities, however you may need to find additional help for your technology issue. Please note that the Newberg Public Library/City of Newberg is not responsible for your device or issues that may arise from the Tech Help session.

How can I reserve the meeting room?

Our meeting room is temporarily unavailable for reservations. Please check back with us later for updates.


Please read the Facility Use Policy to first determine if your group qualifies to use the library's meeting room.

To check for availability of the meeting room, contact the information desk. (503) 538-7323, option 6. If the meeting room is available, complete the reservation form and return it to the library in-person, by email (nplibrary@newbergoregon.gov), or via US mail. Reservations are not confirmed until the library has your completed form and notifies you the reservation is valid. 

The Newberg Public Library makes its meeting room available for use by nonprofit and civic groups for cultural, informational, educational, intellectual, and civic purposes. Availability is contingent on there being no conflict with library programs, meetings, or events, which have priority. Priority for use of the meeting room is to individuals or organized groups in the library’s service area. 

How can I reserve a Cultural Pass?
Cultural Passes can be reserved by contacting the information desk. (503) 538-7323, option 6. Please have your library card ready when you call. Each pass may be reserved up to one month in advance with a library card in good standing. Cultural passes must be picked up and returned to the Newberg Public Library. Thank you Newberg Early Birds Rotary Club for sponsoring the Cultural Pass program.
Do you offer exam proctoring?

Yes, the Newberg Public Library does proctor exams.

  • Arrangements must be made with an Information Desk staff member at least one week in advance.
  • All test taking requirements and instructions must be received from the issuing educational institution before any tests are taken.  
  • Examinations must be taken during open library operating hours.
  • Students must present photo identification to the proctor at test time.
  • Returning or receiving exams via fax is not available, however exams may be scanned and returned via e-mail. 
  • For paper exams, completed examinations will be returned to the testing institution via U.S. Postal Service or scanned and sent via e-mail to the instructor. 
  • Copies of completed exams are not retained by the library.
  • Examinations not completed by the student within 30 days of receipt by the library will not be retained unless the student has made prior arrangements.
  • The exam must be taken at the designated desk located directly beside of the upstairs Information Desk. The Librarian may not be able to observe the student at all times.
Online Examinations 

The Library does not allow the installation of any special software that may be needed to complete the examination on a library computer. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the library's computing resources are adequate for their test taking requirements.
